Study Groups

Math is easier when you don’t have to figure it out alone.

Small-group math support where students can ask questions, exchange ideas, learn from their peers, and grow into more confident, independent learners.

Why groups?

Because a group creates a kind of learning we can’t recreate one-on-one.

  • Students build on each other’s thinking.

    In a group, students are figuring things out together. An idea from a peer might work or it might not. Students have to consider it, test it, question it, and build on it as they work toward understanding together.
  • Students learn how to describe their thinking.

    It’s one thing to know what you did; it’s another to explain why you did it. Talking through their reasoning helps students make their own thinking more visible to others and to themselves.
  • Students learn how to seek support.

    Knowing how to ask for help is part of becoming an independent learner. Students practice identifying where they’re stuck, putting it into words, and asking useful questions of the people around them.
  • Getting stuck becomes normal.

    Students see their peers ask questions, try things that don’t work, change their minds, and need help too. Being stuck becomes part of learning, not evidence that they’re bad at math.

A good fit for…

Study Groups are designed for students who simply need a little more time to explore ideas.

High school math moves quickly. Classrooms can have upwards of 30 students to one teacher, with a curriculum so full there isn’t always time to slow down when something hasn’t quite clicked.

Study Groups were designed to create that time. It’s a place to ask questions, explore ideas, and give new concepts the time they need to really sink in.

  • Moderated discord group chat for support between sessions

Group learning, with individual support when it’s needed.

For students who benefit from the group experience but sometimes need focused help with a particular question or concept.

  • Weekly drop-in office hours with 1:1 support, first come, first served
  • Discounted 1:1 tutoring when more dedicated support is needed

Why the commitment?

The group is part of what makes Study Groups work. Giving students time to get to know one another helps build the trust and familiarity they need to ask questions, share unfinished thinking, and learn from each other.

That’s why Study Groups begin with an 8-week commitment.
