Small Group Math Exam Readiness

A small-group math exam prep program for high school students who are capable and hardworking, but unsure how to study effectively or prepare with confidence for math exams. This program doesn’t just help students prepare for their upcoming math exam, it teaches them how to prepare for math exams in a way they can reuse again and again.

Math exam Prep Designed to Build…

  • Deeper understanding of key topics, not surface-level memorization.
  • Clear priorities, so students know what actually needs review and what doesn’t.
  • The ability to learn from mistakes and adjust before the real exam.
  • Stronger study strategies that go beyond rereading notes or redoing homework.
  • Confidence under exam conditions through practice, reflection, and feedback.

How our Math Exam Readiness Program Works

This program runs as a small group (up to 8 students) focused on a single grade-level math course. Sessions are collaborative, supportive, and intentionally structured to balance content review and learning how to study effectively.

We begin by helping students step out of “everything feels shaky” mode. Through guided activities and reflection, students learn to clearly see what they understand well and what still feels fragile.

They begin to notice patterns in where they tend to struggle and learn how to prioritize the topics that will have the biggest impact on their exam performance. This clarity sets the direction for the entire program and immediately reduces overwhelm.

Each week, we focus on one priority topic identified in Session 1. Sessions follow the same learning-science-informed structure used in 1:1 tutoring, adapted for a collaborative group setting.

Students activate prior knowledge, work through exam-style problems, and are guided with strategic questions that strengthen reasoning and approach. Group discussion allows students to learn from multiple perspectives and see that uncertainty and mistakes are a normal part of learning.

Partway through the program, students will receive a full mock exam which they will be asked to complete on their own time under realistic exam conditions. This gives them a chance to practice pacing, focus, and stamina without the pressure of grades.

The mock exam also provides concrete feedback on what’s working well and what still needs attention, so students can adjust their preparation before the real exam.

In the final session, we review the mock exam together. Students are guided to analyze mistakes without judgment and identify patterns in errors or gaps.

We reflect on strategy, preparation, and decision-making, then create a focused plan for final review. For many students, this reflection is where confidence shifts and mistakes start to become information, not failure.

To support students right before the exam, I’ll be hosting three drop-in Q&A sessions during exam week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday).

These sessions function as open office hours where students can bring last-minute questions or confusing problems. Support is first-come, first-served, with an emphasis on clarifying thinking rather than re-teaching entire units.

Brenna is a wonderful tutor. My daughter ends each session with a smile and greater confidence. Brenna’s support has meant so much in helping to build my daughter’s future. Sometimes it’s about finding the right person at the right moment, and we have been so fortunate to find her along our path.”
